First stop as always for me was story boarding. We all decided last time round that we over elaborated too early on in the process last time, which is obviously something I was at fault for mostly so that's something I had to keep in mind when drawing out this film. The plan was to not worry about crazy interesting composition for now but just focus on the characters and telling the story clearly, as that's all that matters at the end of the day. Essentially the story has two characters (intern and zombie) and two environments (office and lift) so it's keeping it really simple. Below is the first storyboard I drew out for the film:
It may not be a work of art but it definitely does the job we all need it to. It was more of a temporary storyboard to get us moving really, but the basic narrative of the film would be consistent through any changes, and we all realised that 15 shots is all it would take to tell the story, and any others we added were just extras and enhancements to the simple story we were already trying to tell. It might be a step down in artistic quality compared to the previous story boards I'd made, but this one was with a doubt the most useful and concise one I had done yet.
I definitely learned from my mistakes with spell bound, where we just kept chucking gags and extras at the story until it became completely swamped and unreadable. And I think the time we wasted in the first term actually caused us to be a lot more active in getting this film off the ground. Greg started developing the rig and the lift immediately and Ollie began modelling both characters, while Dave worked on the Office environment.
